SBS’s You’re Beautiful is putting up a good fight against the blockbuster in the same time period, IRIS.

You’re Beautiful got off to a start on October 7 with a 9.2% rating (ABG Nielsen Media). However, when KBS’s IRIS premiered on the 14th, its numbers dropped to 7.5%. Considering IRIS’s hype and that its first episode rating was over 20%, this could have been predicted. As IRIS looks toward the 30% ratings mark, one suspected that You’re Beautiful would face falling ratings.

But a strange phenomenon occurred. Even with IRIS’s swift onslaught, You’re Beautiful’s ratings steadily grew. Its episode on October 29 rose to a 9% as it faced off against IRIS, which had received a top rating of 27.7%. Where did You’re Beautiful’s latent force come from?

You’re Beautiful’s secret for maintaining a safe level of popularity can be found in its solid mania viewership. As befits a drama about the growth of an idol group, the drama has plenty of appeal through casting young stars like Jang Geun-seok and Lee Hong-ki, as well as fresh faces like Jung Yong-hwa. Park Shin-hye also attracted notice for her crossdressing role. As members of the fictional band A.N.JELL who sing the songs themselves, they are creating their own fandom phenomenon that resembles a real idol group. As such, it created a passionate viewer fanbase that was heavily populated by teenagers and young twentysomething women.

Also helping is the way that even with the drama’s strong sensibilities, it also has a solid structure. Writers Hong Jung-eun and Hong Mi-ran of Fantasy Couple, My Girl and other dramas have captured the new generation with their characteristic lighthearted style. On top of that, PD Hong Sung-chang directs with a witty touch. They were able to charm the young generation with trendy-drama features that haven’t been seen much in Korean dramas for a while.

If I could get my wish, I’d like to raise the ratings to about 13%, but in order to achieve that, we’ll need the support of thirtysomething women viewers, too. Fan support has been ardent, to say the least, for the SBS drama You’re Beautiful and its young cast. The drama’s lead, Jang Geun-seok, had expressed feeling disappointment that the ratings remain lower than hoped for and that he’d felt responsible as the main cast member. In reaction, fans to jump into action to show their love of the drama.

As you may know by now, he’d written a message to that effect on the drama’s homepage last week, saying, “I wonder whether the reason for the ratings being lower than we thought may be because I’m not portraying the Hwang Tae-kyung character as fully as I could be. If not, maybe the drama isn’t receiving more love because of me as Jang Geun-seok.”

After learning this, Jang Geun-seok’s fan club mobilized both on- and offline in full force to show their overwhelming support. His fan club forum is overrun with supportive messages. Fans also got together and delivered the cast and crew a buffet meal on their film set, which served 100 people. (The photos above and below are from that buffet lunch on October 30.) They’ve also sent presents like vitamins and letters rooting on the production.

Jang expressed his gratitude, saying that he was cheered by all the support by fans who are “like eels who give me energy.” (Eels are relatively expensive and eaten with the belief that they give added energy and stamina.) He added, “I’ll do my best through the end with a grateful heart.” His co-stars Park Shin-hye, Lee Hong-ki, and Jung Yong-hwa said, “Thank you for loving our Geun-seok hyung.”

Meanwhile, on November 2, Lee Hong-ki wrote his own message which he posted on the drama’s website, asking for fans’ continued support. His message read, “Our You’re Beautiful team filmed on the weekend from morning till night. We began filming in September, and already two months have passed and the drama is half over. I feel the difficulty of the actors and staff as we see the drama air scenes we had shot the day before. Even with the tough schedule, as I see the staff who are always smiling and our truly praiseworthy lead actors Jang Geun-seok hyung, Shin-hye, and Yong-hwa, I feel really secure, and coming to the set is a lot of fun.”

He added, “After I finish shooting the drama as Jeremy, I will return to FT Island as Hong-ki, and I’m busy preparing for our concert on the 14th and 15th. I’m working hard on the drama too. Everyone, please give a lot of support to You’re Beautiful through the end.”

The drama has confirmed that it will end on the 26th with Episode 16. Note that this is NOT a cut-down of episodes, and I think the number is probably appropriate for this story. The production had left the door open in the beginning to extend the episodes to 20, but that was always going to be an option only if the drama proved to be a ratings hit.

Javabeans’ take:

A couple things: The article gives too much credence to the whole demographics issue, in my opinion, because I resist the whole rationale that you can market something to an entire category of people on the sole basis of a few criteria like “idols” and “young actors.” I understand the need to classify viewership into definable groups for the purpose of articles like this, in analyzing drama trends, and I’m sure the overall tendency of youngsters to prefer one type of drama over another is true. I just draw the line at overly simplistic arguments about why something appeals to a person purely based on age or gender.

Frankly, I think that You’re Beautiful’s main appeal is NOT actually its youthful subject matter or hot young stars, but the fact that it’s just well-written, period. If anything, I think that the subject of idols and pop stars may actually be turning people off the drama before giving the writing a chance. Those who recognize the drama’s strengths may skew young because those are the people who would give an idol drama a chance in the first place, but I seriously doubt that the cast or idol setting are the main reasons fans are so passionate. (I’ve read lots of comments (here and elsewhere) about why this drama is similar to stuff like Boys Before Flowers or My Fair Lady, but personally, I think this drama is nothing like those two — not in tone or humor or story. Those two had appeal despite bad writing; You’re Beautiful’s charm is enhanced by solid writing.)

FT Island’s 3-member unit band FT.triple made their appearance.

FT.triple made a comeback on KBS 2TV Music Bank on 30th October, with their title song “Love Letter“.

In FT.triple, Lee Jaejin, who has been in charge of bass and vocal all along, will now be in charge of guitar and vocal. Choi Jonghoon also has new challenges in playing the piano instead of the guitar. Choi Minhwan will be playing the drums, something which cannot be left out from a band. The unit group will portray a different image of FT Island.

Lee Jaejin revealed his sturdy vocals earlier through a musical and there is a favourable comparison made between him and FT Island’s vocal Lee Hongki. This time, FT.triple is coming back with a Peter Pan-like youthful image and soulful vocals, bringing a different charm to their fans.

Their title song “Love Letter”, by hit composers, Kim Dohoon and Kim Kibum, is a song that expresses the worries and concern for an ex-lover, written in the form of a letter. With the beats from the melody, together with the realistical lyrics, it will be a touching song.

FT.triple members, who started their unit group’s activities recently, were unable to hide their awkwardness and burden feel.

FT.triple met up with a reporter at KBS 2TV Music Bank on 30th October and said that, “We’re doing activities with only 3 members. We feel that something is lacking and we’re awkward. Without the team’s most cheerful member Lee Hongki and Song Seunghyun, we feel even much that way.”

FT.triple is a unit group formed by FT Island members Choi Jonghoon, Choi Minhwan and Lee Jaejin. Lee Hongki is currently busy with the filming of SBS Wed-Thu drama “You’re Beautiful” and Song Seunghyun is also making lots of appearance on various variety programmes.

FT.triple expressed that, “We have different parts now and our individual loads are heavier, so we feel the burden. Without having to worry for Lee Hongki and Song Seunghyun who are doing well in their own activities right now, FT.triple will work harder too.”

This Autumn in Kpop, we see the trend of many Kpop singers going with the ‘autumn leaf’ hair colour trend.

Following the unique music path of FT Island, a new boyband will be debuting.
This group is none other than FT Island’s unit group, FT.triple, who is releasing their album and starting their promotional activities.

FT.triple is formed by the following 3 FT Island members, namely, Choi Jonghoon (piano), Lee Jaejin (vocal & bass) and Choi Minhwan (drums). They will be showing a different image from FT Island.

With Lee Jaejin’s warm and soothing vocals, their title song “Love Letter” is receiving lots of attention the moment its teaser was released. Their music video was also filmed earlier in Cebu, Philippines.

During the filming in Philippines, communication with the members and staff was cut off due to the bad storm. Fans also showed their worries and concern upon learning the news. Full version of FT.triple’s music video “Love Letter” will be revealed on 26th October at GOMtv and other online music sites.

FT.triple’s album is part of the “Double Date” album, which consists of FT Island’s repackage album with 3 new songs in “One Date” and FT.triple’s songs in “Two Date“. You will be able to listen to both FT Island and FT.triple in this album.

It seems like SBS weekly drama ‘You’re Beautiful / You’re Handsome’ is becoming more popular as the series’ OST album is on the music market, causing a scene.

The OST album, having been released on October 14 2009, has already produced over 20,000 copies due to the amount of praise it has been getting in the public.

Not only that, the publisher of the album believes that album sales can reach over 15,000 since more orders are steadily coming in.

‘You’re Handsome’ OST album is currently recieving good response ever since album sales were release on Hanteo charts. Not only that the song has been rising on popular charts such as Bugs and Mnet. No wonder the album is getting a good response from the audience.

Though the OST is currently gaining popularity due to their strong album sales, it seems that the series is not getting praise due to its low tv ratings. However with its solid audience and its musical background series, more audience will soon be captivated.

The album consists of 11 tracks including songs from FT Island, Lee Hong Ki, A.N.JELL and other various artistes.

‘You’re Handsome / You’re Beautiful’ is currently airing on channel SBS on Wednesdays and Thursdays till end of November.

FT Island Choi JongHoon has recently further blown up criticisms against him on his minihompy.
He referred to the incident between him and KARA Park GyuRi on MBC ‘SaeBaGwi’ aired on 17th October. On the show, Choi JongHoon was introduced as the “pretty boy acknowledged by all” and then the MCs said, “This is the concept similar to that of Park Gyuri. What do you think about Park GyuRi?”
With that he faced Park GyuRi and said, “That person’s personality is a little frivolous, my personality is that I’m honest and straightforward.”

Guess what happens next.

Netizens then broke into hot debate saying, “No matter what, she is 2 years his senior, such a comment is a little too inappropriate”, “Such words said on broadcast is a little too much, like he did not think through what he said at all” etc.

FT Island will be revealing an unique group FT Triple comprising of members Choi JongHoon, Lee JaeJin and Choi MinHwan. And the teaser video to title song to the unique group ‘Love Letter’ will be revealed on 19th October.
In the teaser video, Lee JaeJin will be in charge of vocal and guitar, and member Choi JongHoon will be playing on the piano. And Choi MinHwan will be in charge of the rhythm in the band.
The MV to the song was filmed in Cebu in Philippines. The full version to the MV will be revealed on 26th October.

FT Island’s Choi Jonghoon and Song Seunghyun participated in the fashion show as models.

Just like the title “Men’s Stories”, are you preparing a sensational show for us?

Jaejin: We’re in the midst of preparations now. It’s a secret so we cannot reveal anything yet. We’re also preparing for a big event for the first time.

As what we’ve heard, is it through that all of you are attending actor school?

Minhwan: It’s a secret. How did the rumour came out?

Jaejin: (looking puzzled) Who told you? Actually, we are attending actor school. We want to do a manly performance, so we’re working hard and of course, putting our words into action. We really want to show the manly sides of us, which we have not done it so far.

Wouldn’t it be interesting if all the members exchange their positions in the band and perform?

Minhwan: We really want to give it a try. I watched the Japanese band L’arc-en-ciel’s performance some time back, it was really cool.

Jonghoon: Which instrument would you like to play?

Minhwan: Guitar.

Jaejin: Well, for me, just tell me what to do and I’ll do it. (laughs) We have actually been practising playing other instruments, it’s just that we didn’t have the chance. Minhwan can play the guitar well, Seunghyun is also (turns his head to look at Seunghyun) good in doing many other things. Jonghoon has the feel of a vocalist. (looks at Jonghoon) Why don’t you show us?

Jonghoon: (at a loss) We’ll just leave it like this now. I’ll show it at the concert. (laughs)

Please don’t be like that. Show us something please.

Jaejin: (looks at Jonghoon and laughs) You’re caught!

Jonghoon: (completely at a loss, and rejecting using hand gestures) It’s not like that. Really cannot.

Jaejin paused for a while when talking about Seunghyun’s playing skills, is it because he joined the band later and lack of practice?

Minhwan: It’s definitely not like that. Seunghyun’s concept was originally like this. A concept whereby the members got to keep up with him. (laughs)

Jaejin: That’s right. In fact, Seunghyun is a friend who can rap well and has outstanding abilities.

So, will we be able to see solo stages at the concert?

Jaejin: Well, since we have already prepared something special…

Minhwan: Actually, there won’t be any solo stages. We are preparing a special stage though.

Have you all been practising other things to bring out members’ individual charm then?

Jaejin: I am doing lots of singing practice for this concert. Besides Hongki and Seunghyun, I am also working hard in singing. I’m thinking of singing for our fans at the concert.

Minhwan: I’m doing some liaising to introduce a some new faces to our fans. It’s a new group. They are also our friends.

Jonghoon: Is it a female group?

Minhwan: No. A male group.

Jonghoon: Aish, then I’m not interested. (laughs)

Seunghyun: It’s my first concert stage in Korea, so I’m practising a lot. I’m also doing lots of preparations so as to show the best side of myself at the concert.

Jonghoon: Since the concert title is “Men’s Stories”, we want to show some manly and charismatic sides of ourselves. We’re also thinking of exposing ourselves, if the fans want.

So now we have a preview of the members exposing themselves at the concert. All of you must have been doing lots of exercise.

Minhwan: We have a lot of fitness equipment in our dorm. Sometimes if we are bored, we’ll spend time doing exercise. But, in fact, we do not exercise regularly due to our busy schedules.

Hongki couldn’t join us today due to his busy drama filming schedule as well.
Since he’s not around, is there anything you would like to say?

Minhwan: Hongki-hyung started exercising when his drama filming started. Hmm.. How should I say? He was over-doing it. Even when he’s walking, he exerts strength in his arms and walk…, and when he’s exercising, he lets out groaning sounds. I hope he doesn’t do that.(laughs) I’ll get goosebumps.

Jonghoon: Sometimes, even in dramas, he walks with stiff arms. We’re embarrassed of that, Hongki.

Seunghyun: I’ll do a video letter for him.
Dear Hongki-hyung, let’s share clothes. Since we are members living under one roof, there will be times when I wear your clothes by mistake. There isn’t a need to say “take it off”, right? There are people around so please say it nicely to me. Don’t get angry when you see this video and I hope you will protect me with your love. Hongki-hyung, I love you.

All: Ok! FT Island’s concert will be held at Jangchung Gymnasium on 14th and 15th November. We have prepared many things and it’s also few days right after Minhwan’s birthday, so we hope many people will come. Hongki, who is not here with us right now, is also practising hard, so do come and enjoy. Until now, it’s FT Island.
